What Teachers Make

Yours Truly

Are people not in love anymore? Do people no longer wish to take that love and funnel it in to the beautiful, satiating bond of marriage? The only people I see striving towards this most concrete of public declarations of love are those in the gay communities. What has happened to the man and the woman? Adam was so enraptured by Eve, so defined by his love for her, that he subjected his body to the Forbidden Fruit upon her request. Where did this kind of love, this kind of commitment go? Nowadays it seems as though the warriors of heart and the knights of passion that this world used to brim with are content to crash on their girlfriend’s couch. Where is the determination in love? What happened to the til death do us part couples? Modern men are too concerned with arming themselves with college degrees and letters of recommendation to climb the corporate ladder instead of using that ladder to save their lovely maiden. Modern women are so strung out with the day to day that they don’t realize that they are stretching to hold the reins on a horse they don’t have to guide. If we could all return to one for one, one spouse to another, for life, forever, the world could be saved. The men would have the opportunity to become the Knight that rests in their hearts, and the women could be the fragile, beautiful girls wishing to be swept away.

As recently as the 1970s, people have seemed to give up on marriage. Sociologists are calling this 40 year span the “retreat from marriage.” But why would people need to “retreat” from a haven? A marriage is like a home for your heart and soul. It is somewhere quiet and warm that you can escape to when the world inevitably falls on you. A marriage is a tag team. You know beyond a shadow of a doubt that when you take the last blow that you can possibly stand, that your partner will step in and give you victory. A marriage is like a current. It is swift and smooth, and if both will go along with it, you will have the ride of your life.

“Love seems the swiftest, but it is the slowest of all growths. No man or woman really knows what perfect love is until they have been married a quarter of a century.
- Mark Twain Notebook, 1894

The the Impotence of Proofreading

Taylor Mali is the greatest wordsmith I have ever heard

I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived. I did not wish to live what was not life, living is so dear; nor did I wish to practice resignation, unless it was quite necessary. I wanted to live deep and suck out all the marrow of life, to live so sturdily and Spartan-like as to put to rout all that was not life”
- Henry David Thoreau
